Larsen: Pell Grant Cuts Would Devastate Local Students

KGMI News

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- U.S. Representative Rick Larsen says budget cuts could have a negative impact on students.

Larsen said on Wednesday that cutting Pell grants in the federal budget would devastate students of local schools like Western Washington University.

“Western Washington University in the last school year had about 3,100 students receive Pell grants, for a total of about $11-million,” said Larsen.

Pell grants are federal funding for two- and four-year college students.

“But as we look going forward, we still need to be sure that we’re investing in the right places, and Pell grants is one of those places where we need to continue to invest,” Larsen said.

The budget would cut the maximum Pell grant by $845.
