Larsen Congratulates Opportunity Council on Grant to Help At-Risk and Homeless Veterans

Today, U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen (WA-02) released the following statement after the Department of Veterans Affairs announced that the Opportunity Council is receiving a $684,051.60 grant to help low-income veterans secure permanent housing in Island, Skagit and Whatcom Counties. This grant will help the Opportunity Council prevent homelessness for veteran families in the local community. Larsen pushed for the Opportunity Council to receive this grant by sending a letter to the National Center on Homelessness Among Veterans. In the letter, Larsen urged the Center to consider the Opportunity Council based on their hard work helping over 18,000 homeless and low income families a year.

“Too many local veterans are struggling with homelessness,” said Rep. Larsen. “This grant will help the Opportunity Council increase access to stable housing for at-risk and homeless veterans in our community. One of my most important responsibilities as a member of Congress is ensuring the brave men and women who put their lives on the line for our country get the support that they have earned and deserve. This grant will help the Opportunity Council prevent and end homelessness for veterans and their families in Northwest Washington.”
"Partner agencies of the Whatcom County Coalition to End Homelessness are committed to ending veteran homelessness," said Greg Winter, Director of the Homeless Service Center and chair of the local coalition. "This collaboration with the VA and community-based providers gets us one giant step closer to that goal."
