Larsen Statement on Repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen (WA-02) released the following statement today after President Obama certified the repeal of “Don’t ask, Don’t Tell” with the support of the Secretary of Defense and all four service chiefs. President Obama signed a certification that will end the ban on gays serving openly in the military on September 20, 2011.
“We should not prohibit Americas from serving their country because of their sexual orientation.
“I am glad to see the President and the Department of Defense certified the repeal of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy.  For over a decade, men and women have had to hide who they are in order to wear the uniform of our country.  During times of peace, but especially during times of war, whether a solider is willing, ready and able to stand up and fight for their nation is the only requirement we should be make of them.”
