Larsen Statement on Supreme Court’s Decision on Arizona Immigration Law
Washington, DC,
June 25, 2012
Rep. Rick Larsen, WA-02, issued the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down major portions of Arizona’s controversial immigration law (SB 1070). “The Supreme Court today reaffirmed the Constitutional authority of the federal government to write and enforce immigration laws. One country cannot have 50 different sets of immigration laws. Federal law must be applied in an even and fair manner across the nation. “I am still concerned about the provision requiring law enforcement officials to check the immigration status of those they suspect may be in the country illegally. But the Court made it clear that this provision is still subject to review, and may do so if there is evidence that Arizona officials are using racial profiling to ask for immigration papers. “Congress must address comprehensive immigration reform in a way that bolsters our economy and treats immigrants humanely. I believe we can meet that challenge, and I will continue working with my colleagues to bring consistency and fairness to our immigration system.” |
