Larsen: Supreme Court Decision Gives More Urgency to Effort to Overturn Citizens United
Washington, DC,
June 25, 2012
Rep. Rick Larsen, WA-02, released the following statement today following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to reject the state of Montana’s campaign contribution spending restrictions. “The Supreme Court today compounded the problem it created with its Citizens United decision by preventing states from making their own decisions about how to finance their own elections. We have already seen the damaging effects of secret corporate money in elections around the country. This will only make the situation worse. “The decision today gives greater urgency to overturning Citizens United. I am a cosponsor of the DISCLOSE Act, which would bring much-needed transparency to election spending. And I am fighting for a Constitutional amendment that would declare that corporations are not people and they do not have the inherent right to spend freely to influence elections.” |
