WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05), a member of the Subcommittee on Aviation of the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, and Congressman Rick Larsen (WA-02), chairman of the Aviation Subcommittee, took action to help air travelers navigate increasing numbers of flight cancellations and delays. Congresswoman Williams and Chairman Larsen sent a letter to Airlines for America, which represents 10 of the largest U.S.-based airlines, seeking answers about the sources of widespread air travel difficulties. More than 750 flights at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport alone have been canceled in 2022. Congresswoman Williams and Chairman Larsen wrote to Nicholas E. Calio, President of Airlines for America: “This past holiday weekend alone, over 2,200 domestic flights were canceled. Meanwhile, both the weekend prior and Memorial Day weekend had cancelations in the hundreds. Recently, too many travelers have been left frustrated and scrambling to rearrange their schedules in response to widespread air travel difficulties. We appreciate your June 24th letter to U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg outlining steps the airline industry is taking to address this problem. Yet, we request additional information from the industry to identify and evaluate the ongoing issues. Moreover, airlines must take all appropriate steps to ensure the flying public receives the safe and reliable services we have come to expect and deserve.”
