EVERETT, WA – Rep. Rick Larsen (WA-02) announced Ji Min Sung, a senior at Mariner High School in Everett, as the Second District winner of the 2021 Congressional App Challenge. Ji Min’s winning entry, “Covid-19 statistic app,” displays up-to-date statistics for users to easily track COVID-19 data.

“Since we are in the pandemic, checking COVID cases became part of our lives. However, the website statistics provided less portability, efficiency, and flexibility in giving information to users. I saw this problem from the user perspective and wanted to make it better and give users a better experience,” said Ji Min.

Larsen praised Ji Min’s winning entry and encouraged eligible middle school and high school students to participate in future Congressional App Challenges.

“The Congressional App Challenge has again shown the creativity of talented students from across Northwest Washington. I congratulate all students who competed and our winner, Ji Min Sung, who developed a user-friendly method to track COVID-19 statistics,” said Larsen.

As the Second District winner, Ji Min’s app will be eligible to be on display in the U.S. Capitol and on the House of Representatives website.

In 2020, Kamiak High School student Ethan Soh won with an app that created a user-friendly way to read foreign languages from applications or documents and translate those words into a readable format

Washington state continues to be a leader in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics with more than 180,211 high school students and 110,737 college students enrolled in Career and Technical Education programs.

The Congressional App Challenge is an annual competition that aims to help maintain U.S. competitiveness by inspiring middle school and high school students to pursue crucial STEM skills. For more information about the Congressional App Challenge, visit https://www.congressionalappchallenge.us/
